Equipment guide

Choose a modem by compatibility first.

What a cable modem does

A standalone cable modem connects a DOCSIS cable service to a router over Ethernet. It does not automatically provide whole-home Wi-Fi. A gateway combines modem, router, and usually Wi-Fi functions in one enclosure.

A compatible modem still needs the right router and local network to deliver a good experience.

DOCSIS and Ethernet

For fast service, check both the modem’s DOCSIS capability and its Ethernet handoff. A multi-gigabit plan can be bottlenecked by a one-gigabit port anywhere in the path.

Provider approval

Use the provider’s current approved-device information for the exact plan and service address. Retailer compatibility claims can age quickly.
