US market
Compare internet providers by technology, not just headline speed.
Cable
Cable service commonly uses a DOCSIS modem or gateway over coax. Customer-owned modems may be permitted, but provider approval and service-tier requirements should be checked before buying.

Fiber
Fiber normally terminates at an optical network terminal or provider gateway. A DOCSIS cable modem is not used for fiber service. Fast upload and low latency are common reasons households prefer fiber when it is available.
5G and fixed wireless
Fixed wireless can be easy to install, but performance depends on radio conditions and local capacity. Gateway placement matters.
Satellite
Starlink and other satellite systems can serve properties that lack strong wired options. Sky visibility, equipment placement, and local network capacity all matter.
